Severe erosion in Cherry Grove after Tropical Storm Ana

When Tropical Storm Ana hit North Myrtle Beach around 6 a.m. Sunday, it took some of the beach with it, city officials said.

“There is severe erosion in Cherry Grove,” North Myrtle Beach spokesman Pat Dowling said. “At some dune walkovers, at the last step there is a foot to 2 feet before the sand ... at low tide.”

Dowling said that area of the city already had significant beach erosion but the storm has worsened things.

“At high tide, in some sections [Cherry Grove] doesn’t have any beach left,” he said.

Dowling said the city manager already has spoken with officials about the erosion.

“[City Manager] Mike Mahaney is talking to county, state and federal officials to see what to do next,” he said. “We need some emergency renourishment up there.”

The city also experienced some flooding, with high water on Ocean Boulevard and other low-lying streets.

Winds got up to 45 mph during the storm when it hit land in North Myrtle Beach, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
