UPDATE: Thunderstorms with pea-sized hail in Pee Dee Thursday - gusts to hit 50 mph

An updated report from the NWS Wilmington NC was issued on Thursday at 5:27 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 6 p.m. The alert is for Myrtle Beach area, Inland Georgetown, Coastal Georgetown and Conway as well as Marion and Williamsburg counties.

The storms are forecast to bring wind gusts of up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail (0.25 inches).

"At 5:27 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm near Dongola, or 10 miles west of Socastee, moving southeast at 15 mph," according to the NWS. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible."

Locations impacted by the alert include Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Pawleys Island, Myrtle Beach Airport, Springmaid Pier, Socastee, Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Burgess, Bucksville, Bucksport, Dongola, Plantersville, Outland, Yauhannah, Litchfield Beach, Rhems and Waccamaw Community Hospital.

The NWS comments, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways."

This alert is in effect until 6 p.m.

How to react when facing a lightning hazard?

Lightning hits the United States approximately 25 million times annually. The majority of these strikes happen during the summer, causing around 20 fatalities each year, according to the NWS.   • Once inside, avoid contact with corded phones, electrical equipment, plumbing, and windows and doors.
  • Wait for 30 minutes after the final lightning or thunder before heading outside again.

If finding indoor shelter is not an option:

  • Steer clear of open fields, hilltops, or ridge tops.
  • Avoid tall, isolated trees or other elevated objects. If you are in a forest, stick to areas with shorter tree cover.
  • If you are in a group, spread out to avoid the current traveling between group members.
  • When camping in an open environment, select a campsite in a valley, ravine, or low region. Just remember, tents do not offer protection from lightning.
  • Stay away from water, wet items, and metal objects. Water and metal do not attract lightning but they are excellent conductors of electricity.

Rainy weather driving tips

  • Turn on headlights - Even in daylight, using headlights can help improve visibility and let other drivers know where you are.
  • On the road - Drive in the middle lanes and stay on high ground. Rainwater tends to stockpile on the edges of roads.
  • Steer clear of puddles - Driving into puddles or low areas of rainwater can cause vehicles to hydroplane or skid out of control.
  • Do not follow large vehicles closely - Large vehicles like trucks or buses can create a spray of water that can reduce your visibility.
  • Avoid flooded zones - If you encounter a flooded road, make a U-turn and go back. The powerful currents of flash floods can carry drivers off the road. Driving through deep water can also damage a vehicle's mechanical and electrical systems.

What is hydroplaning?

Hydroplaning happens when a vehicle starts sliding uncontrollably on wet roads.

This happens when water in front of the tire builds up faster than the vehicle's weight can push water out of the way. The water pressure then causes the vehicle to rise and slide on a thin layer of water between the tires and the road, making the driver lose control. The three main causes of hydroplaning are:
