Ice biggest threat to Myrtle Beach area. What residents are doing to prepare
Myrtle Beach area residents are being told to make preparations as the Grand Strand readies for dangerous cold temperatures and significant ice accumulations this weekend.
Stores are already seeing customers coming in search of winter items that they are not usually in need of along the coastal area.
Michael Owens, assistant manager at Boulineau’s Ace Hardware in North Myrtle Beach, said Wednesday that high-demand items are products to melt ice, snow shovels, car scrappers and heaters. “Things for staying warm and being prepared for (the storm),” Owens said.
The store had a steady line of people since 7 a.m. Wednesday waiting for propane, employees told a reporter. By Wednesday afternoon, the store had sold of rock salt and kerosene heaters.
On the other side of Horry County, Walker’s Hardware in Conway also is seeing an increase in people making preparations by buying salt to melt ice and heaters and propane, said cashier Michelle Scott.
The threat of ice is the biggest concern for the Myrtle Beach area, which could affect power for thousands of residents.
Santee Cooper changed its alert status Tuesday to Operating Condition 4, meaning there is a possible threat to the company’s electric system, according to a press release.
Details on the storm’s timing remain uncertain, but it is expected to be at its worst late Saturday into Sunday, and could last into next week as precipitation thaws and then refreezes.
How to prepare for the incoming winter storm
In the meantime, Horry County Emergency Management is telling residents to prepare, including:
- Have emergency supplies for your home and car.
- Insulate exposed pipes and leave faucets dripping to prevent freezing.
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Replenish fuel for cars and heating sources.
- Make plans for outdoor pets.
- Properly ventilate heat sources.
When traveling:
- Monitor forecasts and road conditions.
- Allow extra time for commutes.
- Remember bridges ice first.
