The storm has passed — but watch for ice overnight

(Updated 9:08 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11)

The storm made its way over the ocean, meaning skies should clear later today as residual clouds move on, said Tim Armstrong, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 40s on Saturday before dropping into the 20s overnight. There will also be 10 to 15 mph winds with gusts up to 25 mph.

Make sure the roads are dry before heading out Saturday evening as the cold weather could create ice overnight.

On Sunday, it will be sunny with temperatures in the 40s and 5 mph winds, Armstrong said.

With warmer temperatures hitting the coastal areas, Broadway at the Beach was open as normal on Saturday morning with no signs of the winter weather the night before.

Freezing rain & ice in Myrtle Beach and inland Horry County

(Updated 1:45 p.m. Jan. 10)

This weekend the Grand Strand could see a mixture of winter weather precipitation, forecasts show.

The latest update from the National Weather Service out of Wilmington, North Carolina, shows that light pressure moving through the Southeastern United States will cause inland areas of Horry County to experience light freezing rain on Friday night and possibly early Saturday morning.

At the beginning of the precipitation, the NWS forecast said some sleet and snow will mix in with the freezing rain, but the total accumulation levels are expected to be under an inch.

Horry County was under a winter advisory beginning Friday evening.

While significant ice accumulations are not in the forecast for Horry County, some roads could become slick - typically bridges and overpasses first as they are not warmed by the ground, according to Horry County Emergency Management.

Airport seeing flight cancellations

(Update 1:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10)

Myrtle Beach International Airport is seeing several flights canceled because of the impending winter storm that is expected to hit the Grand Strand area Friday evening.

Several American Airline flights to Charlotte, North Carolina, were canceled, as well as flights to Atlanta.

At least 700 flights were canceled at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Friday as a snow system is expected in that area, according to WBTV.

FlightAware data from Jan. 10 showed 700 flights were canceled as of 12:50 p.m., with more than 90 flights delayed at that time.

The majority of cancellations were for American Airlines flights.
