Wintery storm causing closings, flight cancellations in Horry County. Here’s what to know
The Grand Strand is expecting winter weather beginning Friday evening and possibly into Saturday.
With the impending storm, which will bring freezing rain and possible icy conditions in Horry County, several places have reported closings and cancellations.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, said some sleet and snow will mix in with the freezing rain, but the total accumulation levels are expected to be under an inch.
Here’s what places have reported changes:
Surfside Beach Pier closed
(Update 2:08 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10)
The Surfside Beach Fishing Pier is closed for the rest of the day Friday because of freezing precipitation that is causing unsafe walking conditions, according to a Facebook post from the town.
The pier is expected to reopen at 7 a.m. Saturday.
Winter Weather Advisory
(Updated 1:37 p.m. Friday)
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for northern portions of Horry County beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and possibly into early Saturday, according to the Horry County Emergency Management on Facebook.
The front end of the weather system moving across the Southeast could feature winter precipitation such as freezing rain and sleet in Horry County, the post said.
Significant ice accumulations are not in the forecast for Horry County but some roads could become slick - typically bridges and overpasses first as they are not warmed by the ground, the post said.
Airport seeing flight cancellations
(Update 1:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10)
Myrtle Beach International Airport is seeing several flights canceled because of the impending winter storm that is expected to hit the Grand Strand area Friday evening.
Several American Airline flights to Charlotte, North Carolina, were canceled, as well as flights to Atlanta.
At least 700 flights were canceled at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Friday as a snow system is expected in that area, according to WBTV.
FlightAware data from Jan. 10 showed 700 flights were canceled as of 12:50 p.m., with more than 90 flights delayed at that time.
The majority of cancellations were for American Airlines flights.
HGTC closes over weather predictions
(Updated 12:58 p.m. Jan. 10)
Horry-Georgetown Technical College announced by email that it will close at noon on Friday, Jan. 10, and will remain closed through the weekend with no Saturday or Sunday classes.
Faculty, staff, and students will not report to classes, clinicals, internships, any other type of in-person or online instructional activities, nor federal work study positions.
HGTC will resume normal operations on Monday unless notified otherwise.
