Severe storm left mark in Horry. Get ready to do it again Friday. Here’s what to expect
Wednesday is a much different day then Tuesday in the Myrtle Beach area after a severe storm brought heavy rains and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.
However, residents should prepare to do it all again on Friday, as the National Weather Service is predicting severe storms with damaging winds and possible tornadoes across southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina, which includes the Myrtle Beach area. The storms are expected to hit Friday afternoon and into the evening.
The area can expect more rain on Friday, according to meteorologist Stephen Keebler with the NWS office in Wilmington, North Carolina. While it’s not expected to be as strong as Tuesday, Keebler said there could be some threat of severe weather.
On Tuesday, there were several tornado warnings for Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach areas, but there were no confirmed tornado touch downs, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
There were several super cells out in the ocean Tuesday evening that never made it to shore, according to Keebler.
One of those was in North Myrtle Beach, where residents spotted a waterspout.
“We were kind of fortunate in that respect,” Keebler said. “It was a significant storm just a few miles offshore. A waterspout, that was the extent.”
Wind gusts reached 62 mph in North Myrtle Beach and 47 mph in Myrtle Beach, according to NWS.
The NWS is still filtering reports of damage, but it appears most of it was downed trees and power outages, Keebler said.
“This was really an unusually strong storm (Tuesday),” Keebler said.
