Possible waterspout appears off Myrtle Beach coast Friday morning. See it here.

A waterspout was spotted out in the ocean in downtown Myrtle Beach Friday.

A Myrtle Beach-resident saw it while eating at a Mexican restaurant on Ocean Boulevard. He saw the waterspout close to noon.

It was the first report of the waterspout for the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

However, because of the chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday afternoon in the Myrtle Beach area, and the water being really warm, those make for good conditions for a waterspout, according to Matt Scalora, meteorologist with the NWS.

It’s not that unusual to see waterspouts over South Carolina waters, Scalora said, adding that the NWS receives a lot of sightings.

Scalora said the waterspout doesn’t have anything to do with Hurricane Lee, which is currently a category 4 storm now off the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
