Beaches are back open for Memorial Day after rainy weekend in Myrtle Beach

Memorial Day weekend is generally considered the start of the tourist season along the Grand Strand, but a cool and rainy weekend led to the cancellation of holiday events and kept many tourists away from the boulevards and beaches. Photo taken May 27, 2023.

It is now safe to swim in Myrtle Beach after a weekend of rain, high winds and strong currents, the National Weather Service says.

The risk for rip currents on Memorial Day is low for beaches in Horry and Georgetown counties, including North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Garden City and Pawleys Island, as of Monday morning.

In Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, the weather service forecasts a moderate longshore current going from south to north. As always, beach-goers should check the flags flying at lifeguard stands for the most accurate information.

Memorial Day is expected to be cloudy but rain-free, with a high in the mid 70s.

The safer swimming conditions on Monday come after a weekend of bad weather. Visitors in Myrtle Beach area for the holiday weekend and Atlantic Beach Bike Week dealt with rain and double red flagged beaches. Memorial Day weekend is considered the start of the tourist season in the Grand Strand.
