Myrtle Beach area residents can expect colder weather this holiday weekend — cold enough to snow, according to overnight reports.

A few areas of light snow flurry activity were reported Saturday in Conway and toward the beaches, including Garden City, according to Jordan Baker, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C.

However, Baker said it shouldn’t be a concern. “It’s barely making it to the ground,” he said. “You’d have to squint to see it.”

What is a concern is the overnight temperatures, which will dip into the mid-20s tonight. Baker said tonight’s numbers will be the second time this month that temperatures have dipped below freezing.

He advised residents to take care of their water pipes to prevent freezing and possibly bursting. Having grown up in the area, Baker said pipes here are pretty shallow and could be prone to freezing.

He said temperatures for the Myrtle Beach area are slightly below normal.

The Saturday forecast calls for clear skies with a high of 47. Sunday’s high will be 51 with a low of 29.

Temperatures will begin to climb on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday, with a high of 57 and a low of 41.

Baker said it will begin to warm up again Tuesday, possibly getting into the 70s mid-week.

However, that comes ahead of another cold front that could bring much needed rain.
