Tropical Storm Nicole track shifts west, increasing threat of tornadoes for Myrtle Beach area

A National Weather Service forecast now shows Tropical Storm Nicole shifting west, bringing less rainfall and lower wind gusts, but an increase chance of tornadoes for the Grand Strand.

The storm is expected to bring some impacts Thursday and Friday, including gusty winds, coastal flooding, a few tornadoes and 1-2” of storm rainfall according to the latest briefing.

There is a slight risk for tornadoes for all of northeast SC and southeast NC during Friday. Tropical cyclone tornadoes tend to develop quickly and move fast, the NWS said.

A Gale Warning is now in effect for coastal waters through tonight, with winds of 25-30 kt and gusts to 35-40 kt expected. Winds of 20-25 kt with gusts to around 30 kt are expected Thursday through Friday night.

Conditions are expected to improve Friday night into Saturday.
