Horry County business closings and event cancellations due to Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian, which is now a category 1 hurricane according to the National Hurricane Center, is predicted to bring heavy rain, flooding and high winds to the Myrtle Beach area late Friday.

Some in Horry County are now postponing plans or canceling events in preparation for the severe weather this weekend.

Horry County Government’s offices, facilities and all circuit/family and magistrates courts will be closed Friday, September 30, 2022, due to expected impacts from Hurricane Ian.

In Addition:

  • All Horry County Parks will be closed beginning 5 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2022 and all Horry County sponsored outdoor athletics are canceled from Thursday, September 29, 2022 through Saturday, October 1, 2022. Parks & Recreation Centers plan to be open Saturday for indoor activities.
  • All Horry County Memorial Library branches will be closed Friday, September 30, 2022.
  • The Horry County Museum and L.W. Paul Living History Farm has canceled all programming Friday, September 30, 2022.

Closures announced by Conway Medical Center for Hurricane Ian

All community classes and seminars for Friday, September 30 have been canceled or postponed.

Some hospital services will be closed on Friday, September 30. These will resume Monday, October 3rd. These services include:

· CMC Outpatient Services including Surgery

· CMC Endoscopy

· CMC Rehabilitation Services

All CMC primary care, pediatric, and specialty physician offices will be closed on Friday, September 30. They will reopen Monday, October 3rd.

Solid Waste Authority – Hurricane Ian Facilty Closings

The Horry County Solid Waste Authority facilities will utilize the following schedule for Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, and Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022.

• All Solid Waste Authority Facilities – Landfill, Material Recycling Facility, Household Hazardous Waste Facility and all 25 Horry County Recycling Convenience Centers will be closed.

North Myrtle Beach trash collection

The City of North Myrtle Beach has canceled regular trash and recycling pick-up on Friday until after Hurricane Ian or it passes through the area. The city anticipates resuming regular collection on Saturday, weather-dependent.

Surfside Beach sanitation schedule adjusted due to Ian

The Town of Surfside Beach has suspended all sanitation services for Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 due to weather conditions.

All Friday sanitation services have been rescheduled to allow our public works staff to focus on any emergency situations that may arise as a result of Hurricane Ian.

  • Friday Curbside Recycling will take place on Monday, 10/3/2022
  • Friday Yard Debris area will be serviced on Tuesday, 10/4/2022
  • Friday Commercial dumpster route will be serviced on Sunday, 10/2/2022.

Coastal Carolina University goes to online instruction on Friday

For Friday, Sept. 30, all classes at Coastal Carolina University locations have been redirected to online instruction, and only essential personnel will report to campus.

At this time, we anticipate full campus operations and activities to resume on Saturday, Oct. 1. Campus operations remain normal for Thursday, Sept. 29.

Brookgreen Gardens will be closed Friday

Brookgreen Gardens, a botanical garden just south of Murrell’s Inlet announced that the gardens would be closed Friday due to severe weather.

Andrea DeMuth, a zoological curator with Brookgreen Gardens stated that the animals would be secured from the weather, and would not be moved.

Brookgreen Gardens officials said in a press release that a tentative reopening would happen on Saturday.

Partnership with Grand Strand postpones victory lap

The Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce announced that the celebration of a 501c3 foundation would be postponed due to severe weather conditions.

Partnership with Grand Strand, a foundation launched by the chamber in February, will celebrate the end of it’s capital campaign. The event was originally scheduled for Friday, and a new date will be announced “as soon as possible.”

“The monies raised by the foundation will go toward economic and community development initiatives aimed at accelerating economic prosperity and enhancing quality of life for businesses and residents across the Grand Strand over the next five years,” a press release states.

Farmers markets in Myrtle Beach area will be closed this weekend

According to City of Myrtle Beach officials, Myrtle’s Market, which takes place on Mr. Joe White Avenue, will be canceled this Friday and Saturday.

The Market Common Farmers Market is also canceled for this Saturday.

Pride Myrtle Beach postpones Pride in the Park festival

Leaders of Pride Myrtle Beach announced that the Pride in the Park festival would be postponed until October 22.

“Based on the information that we have at this time regarding Hurricane Ian, we feel that this is the correct action to protect festival attendees, volunteers and vendors,” the post stated.

The event will start at 11 a.m.

Town of Surfside Beach Family Festival rescheduled

The 2022 Town of Surfside Beach Family Festival has been rescheduled and will now take place on Saturday, Nov. 5.

According to a press release sent out by town officials, “in the interest of safety the Town has decided to reschedule the Family Festival.”

Tidelands Health postpones Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

Tidelands Health rescheduled the Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Walk for “anticipated effects from Hurricane Ian,” according to the hospital’s officials. The walk will now take place the following Saturday, on Oct. 8.

“The weather forecast really gave us no other option but to delay the In the Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Walk for a week,” said Jessica Sasser, executive director of the Tidelands Health Foundation, in a press release. “We thank our participants, sponsors and vendors for their understanding and flexibility. We look forward to seeing all of you Saturday, Oct. 8, in Murrells Inlet.”

Registration for the event is still available.

Brookgreen Gardens postpones Harvest Home Weekend

Brookgreen Gardens, a botanical garden in Horry County, will postpone the Harvest Home Weekend until Oct. 8-9 for “the safety of guests” due to Hurricane Ian.

“Guests can expect favorite fall activities in the botanical gardens, including a hay maze, pumpkin patch, pumpkin painting and the family favorite scarecrow making contest,” a press release stated about the event.

A Georgetown County district postpones a community cleanup

According to Georgetown County officials, District 7’s community roadside cleanup will be postponed due to inclement weather forecasts for this Saturday.

The cleanup was organized by District 7 County Council member Louis Morant.

A new cleanup date will be provided soon.

Myrtle Beach cancels two events in preparation for severe weather

Myrtle Beach’s Night at Nance and Public Safety Day have been postponed until later in October.

  • Night at Nance will now take place on Oct. 6
  • Public Safety Day will take place on Oct. 22

Horry County School District makes changes to athletics schedules

The Horry County School District made several changes to the athletic schedule this week, including canceling a Conway girls golf match versus North Myrtle Beach High School.

A few events have said they plan to continue on as scheduled. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson held a “Hurricane Alley Rally” kickoff on Monday night.
