Myrtle Beach area under tornado watch until Thursday night. Here’s what to know

The Myrtle Beach area could see storms Thursday as the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Horry and Georgetown counties.

A tornado watch means people should be prepared as tornadoes are possible in the area, but haven’t been detected. A tornado warning occurs when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.

The watch is in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday, according to the NWS. The NWS suggests reviewing emergency plans and preparing to take shelter should a warning take place.

Horry and Georgetown counties are also under a wind advisory and a high surf advisory through Thursday night.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Thursday afternoon, and wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph The high of 72 is forecast.

By Friday, the sun is expected to emerge and the wind is forecast to die down.
