Rain and a chance of snow are in the forecast in the Grand Strand this weekend.

Precipitation that begins as rain and transitions to snow is expected Friday night into early Saturday morning, according to a weather briefing from the National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina.

It is unlikely that snow will accumulate in coastal cities, according to the forecast.

Very cold temperatures are expected to begin Friday night into Saturday, according to the NWS briefing.

Snow accumulation is expected to be light. Roadways are expected to be unaffected.

Cold temperatures make it possible for melted snow to re-freeze and form black ice Saturday night, according to the NWS.

Snow flurries are possible Saturday morning before clouds begin to clear. Forecasters expect a sunny Sunday.

The geographically uncommon snow is expected just a week after an ice storm and unusually low temperatures hit the area. Last week’s storm brought freezing rain and sleet to the Myrtle Beach area and some snow farther inland, prompting businesses to close and schools to move online.
