Beaufort oil spill lab results expected soon
The U.S. Coast Guard has received the test results from samples taken from the oil spill at Beaufort Memorial Hospital and the oil found near Lady’s Island Marina.
It expects to finish its notification process of a responsible party or parties today, Lt. Cmdr. Shannon Scaff said Wednesday afternoon.
An estimated 290 gallons of oil leaked into the hospital’s boiler room on the facility’s bottom level May 23. The leak was believed contained and cleaned up by the next day, the hospital said. But oil was found in the Beaufort River near the facility a week later.
“Following that notification, the Coast Guard will continue to monitor response efforts,” Scaff wrote in a text message to the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.
“The responsible party will be required to make all arrangements associated with those response efforts.”
An employee at Lady’s Island Marina said he had not heard anything from the Coast Guard as of early Thursday morning.
