The last thing you would expect to find on a golf course

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a report of a human femur found on a Daufuskie Island golf course June 7.

Deputies were notified of the remains by Daufuskie Fire Capt. Chris Phillips June 9, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Phillips told deputies a volunteer firefighter had turned the bone over the afternoon before. The report was not available to the media until Wednesday.

The volunteer firefighter said he found the bone around 3 p.m. between 15th hole of the Haig Point Golf Course and the beach on Calibogue Sound around 3 p.m.

The bone had been placed on a railing of the boardwalk near the beach, the firefighter said in the report.

The bone is a left femur, Capt. Bob Bromage said Wednesday, and was turned over to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner’s office sent the remains to be evaluated by a forensic pathologist in Charleston, Bromage said.

He did not know how old the bone is or whether it belonged to an adult, child, male or female. The Sheriff’s Office is awaiting results of the analysis.
