‘It’s too hush-hush,’ sister says of man’s slaying

Family members pleaded tearfully Monday for help in solving killing of Marcus Posey in north Columbia 17 days ago.

Posey’s sister and brother joined Richland County deputies to urge anyone with information about the killing near Haskell Heights First Baptist Church to come forward.

“When something happens in the community, the community comes together,” Kimberly Posey said. “The community isn’t coming together, so someone knows something because it’s too hush-hush for me.”

Her brother was walking home from work when he was killed, Kimberly Posey said. He was found less than 500 yards from home.

Alvin Posey described his brother, who worked at a restaurant, as courageous and responsible. “He had no fear,” Alvin Posey said. “He had to have no fear to walk a mile in the dark through the woods ... to get back and forth to a job that paid him nowhere near compensation (for) what he did to get to and from work. That’s dedication.”

At 34, Marcus Posey was the baby of the family, Alvin Posey said.

Sheriff’s investigator Stephen Dauway said video that might shed light on the circumstances the killing is under review but help from the public is needed.

The victim often walked to and from work, sometimes taking the bus part of the way, Dauway said.

Deputies found Posey at 3:30 a.m. May 21 in the 1100 block of Blue Ridge Terrace a mile north of I-20. Dauway said the victim had been shot twice. There is no indication that the killing was gang- or drug-related, Dauway said.
