Columbia Police charged Derrick Lott, 24, with 2 counts of attempted murder and 6 counts of assault and battery after several people allegedly were targeted by gunfire Friday afternoon outside the Allen-Benedict Apartments on Laurel Street.

Lott turned himself in to Columbia Police on Sunday. After questioning by detectives, he was charged, said police chief Skip Holbrook. Lott is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.

Police believe the Friday afternoon shooting that ended sending one man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg stemmed from an earlier argument between Lott and the victim.

Gunshots also were fired at two pedestrians and an automobile with an adult and three children inside, Holbrook said.

Lott was denied bond at a court hearing on Tuesday, Holbrook said.
