4 charged in Tuesday shooting of bystander
Three men and a juvenile were charged Friday in connection with the Tuesday shooting death of a 33-year-old husband and father who was trying to break up a gang fight in front of his house, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news release.
Charged with murder were Benjamin Hampton, 22, Westley Bell, 17, and a 14-year-old juvenile. Jaylen Burton, 20, was charged with obstruction of justice.
Two groups of men were arguing in front of Darrell Richardson’s home at 4112 Tavineer Drive on Tuesday night, Lott said. Richardson, fearing for his wife and children inside, went outside to get the young men to move away from his home.
Instead, the two groups started shooting at each other, striking and killing Richardson in the process, Lott said.
Tavineer Drive is off Bluff Road south of Columbia, between I-77 and Pineview Drive.
Hampton, Bell, Burton are being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. The juvenile was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
