When designer Konnie Schneider arrived at work Wednesday morning, she noticed a duck with her ducklings crossing over a storm drain. The ducklings didn’t make it.
Employees at the store, Good’s Home Furnishings in Pineville, N.C., called the county’s nonemergency number. Pineville police officers responded about an hour later and removed the storm grate to help rescue them, said the store’s manager, Shana Bretzius.
A warehouse employee, Binny Lovett, climbed into the storm drain. He found two of the three to four ducklings and carried them out, Bretzius said.
Schneider and another designer, Brenda Huszar, cared for the ducklings in the store’s break room for the afternoon in a little box. Later in the day, they were taken to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue in Indian Trail.

“Although we weren’t able to find the mother duck, we made sure the Mallard ducklings will be raised safely by the rescue and returned to nature,” said Dana Mathews, the store’s advertising and marketing director.
