Caterpillar is closing its plants in Newberry and Ridgeway as part of an “aggressive and significant” restructuring announced in September, according to a statement from the company.
In Newberry, an electric power generator set packaging facility will close, resulting in the loss of about 325 jobs. At Ridgeway, about 75 jobs will be lost with the closure of a generator set control panel assembly facility.
Work at the two South Carolina plants will be consolidated into Caterpillar engine facilities in Texas, Indiana and Griffin, Georgia. The consolidation will begin this year and be finished within 18 months.
