State, federal tax relief available to those affected by severe storms, flooding

South Carolina taxpayers affected by the severe storms and flooding that began Oct. 1 could qualify for tax relief from the S.C. Department of Revenue, the agency announced in a news release Wednesday.

The IRS already has provided relief from federal filing and payment deadlines that began Oct. 1, extending it to victims of flooding in 11 counties. As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until Feb. 16, 2016, to file these returns and pay any taxes due. This includes an Oct. 15 deadline for those who received an extension to file their 2014 return and the deadline for making quarterly estimated payments.

The IRS filing and payment relief applies to the following counties identified by the President’s declaration as a federal disaster area:

▪ Berkeley

▪ Charleston

▪ Clarendon

▪ Dorchester

▪ Georgetown

▪ Horry

▪ Lexington

▪ Orangeburg

▪ Richland

▪ Sumter

▪ Williamsburg

The SCDOR will provide the same relief to the taxes it administers. An information letter outlining additional details will be published by the SCDOR later this week.
