One person killed when moped and car collide in Lexington County, SC cops say
One person was killed Saturday night when a moped and car were involved in a crash at an intersection in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Russell Douglas Fowler, a 40-year-old Pelion resident, is the man who died in the crash, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Monday.
The collision happened at about 9:20 p.m., Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said Sunday.
Fowler was driving a 2013 moped was south on Calks Ferry Road, according to Bolt. At an intersection, the moped collided with a 2006 Ford Mustang that was driving east on Old Charleston Road, Bolt said.
Fowler, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene, according to Fisher.
Bolt said that neither the driver nor a passenger in the Mustang were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the people in the Mustang were wearing seatbelts.
Information about what caused the collision was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
Through June 21, at least 390 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least 14 people have died in Lexington County crashes this year, and 40 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
