Multiple people shot and one killed at SC business, Richland County sheriff says

One person was killed and many more were injured early Sunday morning in a shooting at a restaurant/bar in South Carolina, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Ty’shon Vogt, a 25-year-old Irmo resident, was identified as the victim who died, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Sunday night.

The shooting happened at the Jerk Hut at 1004 Zimalcrest Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s near the intersection with Broad River Road in a part of Columbia that’s not far from Exit 65 on I-20.

Eight people were injured, the sheriff’s department told The State on Sunday. Of those, five were shooting victims, including Vogt, the sheriff’s department said in a Monday update. The other victims who were hurt when trampled by people rushing to exit the bar, the sheriff’s department said in an incident report.

In the early morning hours, deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 1000 block of Zimalcrest Drive and found multiple shooting victims at the restaurant, according to the release. There was no word about the exact time the shooting happened, but the incident report showed it was about 3:15 a.m. when deputies arrived at the Jerk Hut.

A large group of people were running through the parking lot when the deputies got to the restaurant, according to the incident report.

Deputies provided medical aid to the victims, and secured the scene, the sheriff’s department said.

EMS took two of the shooting victims from the Jerk Hut to an area hospital, while other victims got to hospitals in private vehicles, according to the release.

Deputies were told that an individual went to the front of the bar and fired a gun into the front door area of the business, the incident report shows. A security guard told the sheriff’s department that there was a fight in the outdoor area of the restaurant and people were then being escorted out of the business, according to the incident report.

Security told the sheriff’s department they were unable to a clear look at the shooter.

Deputies remained at the restaurant for hours as the sheriff’s department continues to investigate the shooting, with assistance from the coroner’s office.

Information about the shooter, or shooters, and the number of people involved, was not available. There was no word about a motive for the gunfire.

No arrests were reported by the sheriff’s department.
