Arrest made after man shot to death, Richland County sheriff says

A man was arrested after a manhunt Thursday in South Carolina for the person who shot a man, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Kevin Jenkins, 55, was arrested after deputies searched the area and located Jenkins in a nearby homeless encampment, the sheriff’s department said. Jenkins faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

At about 9:15 a.m., deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 1100 block of Bush River Road, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s in Columbia, near an overpass above I-26.

Deputies arrived to see members of the Columbia Fire Department performing life-saving measures on a man who had been shot, according to the release.

The shooting victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The identity of the shooting victim has not been released.

No other injuries were reported.

Deputies located Jenkins after K-9 units were called in to search the area. An investigation revealed that Jenkins and the victim knew each other and were in a verbal altercation at the time Jenkins allegedly shot the man, the sheriff’s department said.

Jenkins was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where jail records showed he remained as of Friday morning.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
