Person killed in Lexington County shooting, South Carolina sheriff says
A person was shot and killed Saturday in South Carolina, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
At about 4:40 p.m., the sheriff’s department said that deputies were in the 3500 block of Fernandina Road investigating a fatal shooting. That’s listed as an apartment complex which is on the opposite side of I-26 from the Jamil Shrine Temple in a part of Columbia that’s inside Lexington County.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the shooting victim.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about the shooter, or shooters, and if any more people were involved, was not available. There was no word about a motive for the gunfire.
Deputies said that they identified a person of interest, but there was no word if that person has been taken into custody. No arrests have been reported in the shooting that continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s department.
Crime scene investigators were on scene for hours, processing and collecting potential evidence, according to the sheriff’s department.
“We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety,” the sheriff’s department said on social media.
