Ski mask wearing man waved gun outside of SC school, police say. Here’s why

Two South Carolina residents were arrested Monday following an incident that involved having a firearm on the grounds of a school, according to the Sumter Police Department.

The incident happened at about 4 p.m. at Sumter Christian School, police said Tuesday in a news release. That’s at 420 South Pike W Drive, near U.S. 378/U.S. 76 in Sumter.

No injuries were reported.

Police were called and the school was placed on lockdown because of a report about a man wearing a ski mask and waving a gun in the parking lot of the school, according to the release.

At the school, officers learned that the man — later identified as 35-year-old Sumter resident Cameron Tindal — was distraught over a family pet that was found dead near the school, police said. Information about the pet, and how it died, was not available.

A commotion followed as family members and associates of Tindal began to arrive at the school to console the armed man, according to the release. One of them drove away and the gun was no longer visible, police said.

Police later located and recovered the firearm, according to the release. Information about who took the gun, and where officers found it was not available.

Shaquasha Berry, a 23-year-old Sumter resident, was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony, police said. Her home is about half a mile from the school’s campus, according to police.

Tindal was charged with aggravated breach of peace and possession of a firearm on school grounds, police said. Both Tindal and Berry were booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

Tindal’s bond was set at $6,500 on the combined charges but has not been posted, Sumter County court records show.

Like Tindal, Berry’s bond — $1,000 — has not been posted, according to court records.

Both Tindal and Berry are scheduled to return to court May 22, judicial records show.
