Driver got out of moving car at restaurant and was run over, SC cops say
One person was killed Sunday in Richland County when run over by the vehicle they had been driving, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The deadly collision happened on the private property of 7420 Broad River Road, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway. That’s the Konnichiwa restaurant in the Irmo area of Richland County.
The driver of 2021 Nissan Rogue stopped the SUV in the driveway and was getting out without putting the vehicle in park, according to Ridgeway. When the driver realized the Nissan was still moving the driver tried to get back in but was struck by the vehicle and died at the scene, Ridgeway said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
No other injuries were reported in the crash that continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through March 15, at least 140 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least eight people have died in Richland County crashes this year, and 48 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
