Darius Rucker returning to Columbia to headline Garnet & Black Spring Fest
The University of South Carolina football team will not have a spring game this year. But Gamecock fans won’t be left empty-handed, as they’ll have a chance to see one of USC’s most famous alums fill the vacuum in the absence of the football exhibition.
Darius Rucker will headline a concert at Colonial Life Arena on April 11, which will be in place of what had been the annual spring game, USC officials confirmed to The State on Wednesday.
The Hootie & the Blowfish frontman turned country music star will be joined by fellow country singer, songwriter and actress Lauren Alaina at the Garnet & Black Spring Fest, officials said.
“The Garnet & Black Spring Fest promises to be a great event for fans of all ages and gives us an opportunity to come together and celebrate what it means to be a Gamecock,” USC Athletic Director Jeremiah Donati said Wednesday in a news release. “Our department has been hard at work finding new ways for our fans to interact with one another and our student-athletes, and the Garnet & Black Spring Fest is just one of the new events that we will be announcing to meet that goal.”
USC won’t have a spring game because of ongoing construction to reconfigure Williams-Brice Stadium, according to the release.
“Our top priority is ensuring Williams-Brice Stadium is ready for our September 5 home opener,” Donati said. “As a result, the Garnet & Black Spring Fest was created to not only provide fans with the opportunity to meet and greet our football student-athletes but to come together as Gamecocks.”
Information about ticket prices was not available, but they will go on sale to the public on March 3, following several rounds of presale events.
After tickets go on sale to the general public exclusively at ticketmaster.com, any tickets that are still available can be purchased the next Tuesday (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) or Friday (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.) at the Colonial Life Arena box office — as well as on ticketmaster.com.
Separate from the concert will be a free Garnet & Black Spring Fest Block Party in Foundation Square, at the corner of Lincoln and Greene streets, outside of Colonial Life Arena, officials said. The Block Party will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature autographs from Gamecock student-athletes, food and drinks for purchase, inflatables, live music and more, according to the release.
Rucker’s trick play
Alaina also will join Rucker on his summer solo tour that is scheduled to begin in June. He released those dates Tuesday.
While the “Songs of Summer Tour 2026” includes stops in North Carolina (Greensboro on June 18 and Wilmington on June 19), there was no scheduled performance set for Rucker’s home state of South Carolina. He did something similar prior to his 2022 tour, when the original schedule didn’t have plans for a concert in the Palmetto State.
But just as he did this time, Rucker waited an extra day to announce he would be playing in South Carolina after all. After releasing his concert plans in 2022, Rucker waited a day to announce he was headlining the Riverfront Revival, a two-day music festival in the Charleston area that he helped curate.
About Darius Rucker
Rucker is a three-time Grammy-winning singer.
The Charleston native and bandmates formed Hootie & the Blowfish while they were students at the University of South Carolina in the 1980s. When they were getting started, the band played gigs at frat houses and were staples in Five Points bars and restaurants in Columbia.
Their album “Cracked Rear View” has gone platinum 22-times and was the best-selling album of 1995. It remains one of the best-selling albums of all time and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1995.
In the early 2000s, the group went on hiatus, and Rucker became an award-winning country music star and a member of the Grand Ole Opry, earning a new legion of fans with four No. 1 albums on the Billboard country chart.
Rucker was inducted as a Grand Ole Opry member in 2012 and won his third career Grammy Award in 2014 for Best Solo Country Performance with his Diamond-certified (11-times platinum) version of “Wagon Wheel,” one of the top five best-selling country songs of all time.
In 2019, Rucker and the other members of Hootie & the Blowfish put on a major stadium tour in support of “Cracked Rear View’s” 25th anniversary. The tour concluded its U.S. leg with three nights of shows in Columbia.
Since that reunion tour, Rucker has continued his solo career, along with some other reunions with the rest of his Hootie & the Blowfish bandmates.
Rucker is known as a Gamecocks superfan, who is regularly spotted at USC top games. He’s also been affiliated with USC’s women’s golf team, which competes in a tournament named after him in Hilton Head. He’s also performed several concerts over the years on USC’s Columiba campus and at Colonial Life Arena.
