Woman and her 13-year-old son killed on South Carolina road, officials say

Two people were killed Friday when their vehicle crashed into a disabled log truck, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about noon in Clarendon County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.

A 2015 Toyota Sienna minivan was driving north on Greeleyville Highway, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Bay Shadow Drive the minivan struck a log on a 2011 Western Star truck, with a log trailer, that was disabled in the northbound lane of Greeleyville Highway, Bennett said.

The minivan then ran off the right side of the road where it crashed into a tree, according to Bennett.

Both people in the minivan died at the scene, Bennett said.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as 38-year-old Manning resident Heather Lynn Strebeck, and the passenger who died was her 13-year-old son, the Sumter Item reported.

Bennett said that the truck was unoccupied, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the truck to be disabled in the road was not available, and there was no word about what happened to that vehicle’s driver.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Feb. 15, at least 75 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least five people have died in Clarendon County crashes this year, and 11 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.

That includes a separate wreck Saturday in Clarendon County where another teenager died.

At about 8 a.m., there was a single-vehicle collision on the northbound side of I-95 at the 109-mile marker, said Cpl. Nick Pye of the Highway Patrol. That’s about 20 miles from where Friday’s wreck occurred.

A 2019 Ford sedan was driving north when it ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree, according to Pye.

Both the driver and a passenger in that car were taken to an area hospital where the passenger later died, Pye said. The coroner’s office did not release the passenger’s name, but said it was a 13-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, the Manning Times reported.

Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

There was no word if either the driver or passenger wore seatbelts.

Information about what caused the car to veer off I-95 was not available, but this collision also continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
