Suspect wasn’t found when deputies cleared blocked off area, SC cops say

“Please avoid the area,” the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday morning.

Deputies were on the scene of home in the 1500 block of Horseshoe Drive where a person was barricaded inside, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

By 1:30 p.m., deputies had cleared the scene and there was no threat to the public, the sheriff’s department told The State.

Horseshoe Drive is in a busy area of Columbia, near Exit 74 on Interstate 20, which is the junction with Two Notch Road. It’s densely packed with retail businesses and restaurants, and is a high-traffic spot.

At 6 a.m., deputies were responding to a domestic situation when they believed that the person, called a suspect, barricaded them self inside the home, according to the sheriff’s department.

There was no word if the person was armed, but the sheriff’s department said no shots were fired and no one was injured.

Both crisis negotiators and the sheriff’s department’s Special Response Team called out to the individual, according to the release.

The residence was cleared and the suspect was not located, according to the sheriff’s department.

No arrests have been reported, and the sheriff’s department is continuing to investigate.
