Man was attacked and his girlfriend was kidnapped by duo, SC sheriff says

Two South Carolina men each were arrested on multiple charges after a weekend incident where another man was attacked at gunpoint before his girlfriend was kidnapped, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

A pair of 54-year-old men, Johnny Young and Shawn Campbell, were recently arrested, the sheriff’s department said Tuesday in a news release.

At about 9 p.m. last Saturday, deputies were approached by a man in the area of Fairfield Road and Crane Church Road, according to the release. The man, who was called a victim, said he and his girlfriend had been walking near the 500 block of Crane Church Road when they were approached by two men, later identified as Young and Campbell, the sheriff’s department said. That’s in Columbia, near Exit 70 on Interstate 20.

Young and Campbell held the male victim at gunpoint and assaulted him, then forced the female victim into their vehicle and drove off, the sheriff’s department said.

Deputies potentially identified the vehicle, a gray Cadillac Escalade, and searched the area for Young and Campbell, according to the release.

Deputies located a vehicle that matched the description and conducted a traffic stop, the sheriff’s department said. Both Young and Campbell along with the female victim were inside the vehicle, according to the release.

The female victim had suffered a head wound and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, while the male victim refused treatment at the scene, the sheriff’s department said. Further information on the female victim’s condition was not available.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies also found drugs and drug paraphernalia, according to the release.

Young was charged with kidnapping, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, pointing firearm at another person, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, first-degree assault and battery, and he was also served an outstanding bench warrant from Family Court in Kershaw County, the sheriff’s department said.

Campbell was charged with kidnapping, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, first-degree assault and battery and possession of crack cocaine, according to the release.

Both men were taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and both were denied bond, the sheriff’s department said.

Young was out on bond from a separate incident when last Saturday’s attack and kidnapping happened, Richland County court records show.

On Dec. 26, 2024, Young was arrested on a first-degree assault and battery charge that’s pending, and a $30,000 bond was posted the same day, according to court records.
