A winning Powerball game was sold at a Food Lion in South Carolina. Check you tickets

A Powerball ticket purchased at a Columbia-area Food Lion supermarket before Wednesday’s drawing was one number away from winning the game’s $154 million grand prize.

While the ticket-buyer narrowly missed capturing Powerball’s most recent top payday, they will be rewarded with a $100,000 prize for coming so close, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said Thursday in a news release.

Now the search is underway for the winner.

The six-figure winning Powerball game was sold at the Food Lion grocery store at 1339 Dutch Fork Road, officials said. That’s by Dreher Shoals Road in Irmo, near Lake Murray.

The ticket matched four white ball numbers and the red Powerball number, a feat that has odds of 1-in-913,129 of occurring, officials said. Because the winner spent an additional $1 to purchase the PowerPlay option the $50,000 prize doubled to $100,000 when a “2” multiplier was drawn, according to the release.

The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing were 21, 32, 36, 45, 49 and Powerball: 18.

The winner has 180 days to claim the prize, according to lottery officials.

The winner will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

“Sign the back of your ticket and put it in a safe location until you’re ready to come forward to claim the prize,” lottery officials said.

The Food Lion is expected to receive a commission for selling the winning ticket.

In addition to the $100,000 jackpot, more than 8,000 players in South Carolina bought winning tickets, with prizes ranging from $4 to six figures, according to the release.

Because there was no grand prize winner in Wednesday’s drawing, the jackpot for Saturday’s Powerball drawing has risen to $172 million, according to the game’s website.

Anyone looking to buy a ticket must make a purchase by 9:59 p.m. Saturday for the 10:59 p.m. drawing. Tickets are $2, and could cost more with additional options.

The odds of winning Powerball’s grand prize are 1-in-293 million.
