After standoff with armed man ends, deputies find woman shot in the face, SC cops say

A South Carolina man was arrested overnight following a standoff with law enforcement officers, and a woman was killed, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

Zayvian Patrick Butler, a 20-year-old Gloverville resident, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release.

Deputies got involved at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, when they responded to a call about a shooting at a home in the 500 block of Lawana Drive, according to the release.

As they approached the home, deputies saw several apparent bullet holes in the front door, then were told by witnesses that “Butler was armed and suicidal,” the sheriff’s office said.

Witnesses also said Butler shot several rounds in the home, which included shooting a woman inside, according to the release.

The sheriff’s office’s SWAT team and additional first responders were called to the scene, according to the release. After a period of crisis negotiations, Butler came out and surrendered without further incident, the sheriff’s office said.

Inside the home, deputies found the dead victim in a bedroom, according to the release. She was lying on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound to her face, the sheriff’s office said.

At 1:14 a.m. Monday, 46-year-old Adrienne S. Richardson died at the scene from a gunshot wound to her head, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

No other injuries were reported.

Butler was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center, where he remains as no bond has been set, jail records show. He’s scheduled to appear in court again on April 25, Aiken County judicial records show.

Despite the arrest, the death continues to be investigated by both the sheriff’s office as well as the coroner’s office. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday in Newberry, Coroner Darryl Ables said.

Butler was out on bond from a January arrest when the shooting happened, according to court records. On Jan. 8, Butler was charged with a third-degree assault and battery, and released from jail the following day after a $1,087.50 bond was posted, court records show.

That charge is pending, and Butler is scheduled to return to court Tuesday, according to court records.
