With warm summer weather and beach breezes, golf carts are popular transportation options for locals and tourists alike. Here’s what you need to know about taking a golf cart on the road.

When can you drive a golf cart?

The Code of Laws allows for operation of golf carts on roads during daylight hours–between 6 am and 6 pm normally, and 6 am and 8 pm during daylight savings time.

Where can you drive a golf cart?

According to the South Carolina Code of Laws, a golf cart can be driven within four 4 miles of the registered address or gated community and can only go on secondary highways or streets with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or less.

Golf carts can, however, cross highways and streets with speed limits above 35 miles per hour at an intersection. In North Myrtle Beach, these primary roads are defined as Ocean Boulevard, 27th Avenue S, U.S.Highway 17 and Sea Mountain Highway

Who can drive a golf cart?

Anyone at least 16 years old with a valid driver’s license can operate a golf cart on roads but must carry the license as well as the registration certificate and proof of liability insurance.
