Midlands man killed when SUV crashed into trees is identified by SC coroner
One person was killed and another was injured Tuesday when an SUV crashed into several trees, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Edgar Munnings, an 83-year-old Sumter resident, died in the accident, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said Wednesday.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2:25 p.m. in Sumter County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol.
A 2006 Ford was driving south on Narrow Paved Road, and near the intersection with Levan Lane the SUV ran off the left side of the road, according to Ridgeway. That’s close to Exit 141 on Interstate 95.
The SUV crashed into a ditch then hit several trees, Ridgeway said.
Munnings, a front-seat passenger who was wearing a seat belt, was “heavily entrapped,” and died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.
The SUV driver was hurt in the crash and taken to an area hospital, Ridgeway said. Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.
Ridgeway said there were no other occupants in the SUV, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, 790 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
