Moped rider killed after crash with another vehicle, SC coroner says
A South Carolina man died days after the moped he was driving crashed with another vehicle, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office said.
Gregory Hill, a 64-year-old Sumter resident, is the moped rider who died following the accident, Coroner Robbie Baker said in a news release.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 7 p.m. on June 26 at the intersection of South Sumter Street and West Fulton Street, according to the release. That’s in the downtown Sumter area, about a mile from Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
Hill was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia, where he died on June 29, Baker said.
No other injuries were reported.
An autopsy was scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Information about the collision was not available, but Baker said both his office and the Sumter Police Department are continuing to investigate the wreck.
Through June 29, at least 481 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 16 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 30 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
