Person killed when car and pickup truck crash on South Carolina road, cops say
One person was killed Tuesday when a car and pickup truck crashed on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 1 p.m. in Orangeburg County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
A 2021 Hyundai sedan was driving south on U.S. 301, and at the intersection with Snake Swamp Road, the car was hit by an eastbound 2013 Dodge Ram pickup, according to Glover.
There were two people in the Hyundai, and one was taken to MUSC Health hospital in Orangeburg and later died, Glover said.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the person who died in the crash.
Information about the condition of the other occupant in the Hyundai was not made available by the Highway Patrol. The Highway Patrol did not say if the victim was the driver or passenger of the car.
Glover said the Dodge driver was the only person in the pickup and was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if any of the people involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts.
Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, and there was no word if the crash remains under investigation.
Through Sunday, 346 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 20 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 46 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
