Powerball ticket sold in South Carolina becomes a winner in second-chance drawing
Check your pockets and don’t dump out the trash just yet. A Powerball ticket sold in the Midlands turned into a winner in a second-chance drawing, according to South Carolina Education Lottery officials.
The five-digit winning ticket was purchased in Columbia, lottery officials said Tuesday in a news release. The ticket matched four of the five white balls, along with the red Powerball number, according to the release.
Because the ticket buyer purchased the Double Play option, the $50,000 prize was won in the second drawing held after the regular Powerball drawing, lottery officials said.
The winning numbers — 28, 31, 33, 38, 61, and Powerball: 5 — were drawn Monday night.
There were no winners anywhere in the U.S. in Monday’s traditional Powerball drawing (10, 15, 51, 61, 69, and Powerball: 14). That means there’s currently a $123 million jackpot on the line in Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing.
The winning Double Play ticket was sold at the Publix Super Market at 4611 Hardscrabble Road. That’s on the corner with Lee Road, less than a mile from Ridge View High School.
The winner has 180 days to claim the prize, according to lottery officials.
The winner will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of eight states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
The odds of winning $50,000 playing Powerball are 913,129-to-1, according to the release.
“Sign the back of your ticket and put it in a safe location until you’re ready to come forward to claim the prize,” lottery officials said.
Publix will receive a commission of $500 for selling the winning ticket when it is turned into lottery officials.
