7-year-old dies in crash as suspected drunk driver flees police, South Carolina cops say

A 7-year-old was one of two people killed in a head-on crash with a suspected drunk driver in Upstate South Carolina this week, according to police.

The accident unfolded just before 8 p.m. on Nov. 8 near White Horse Road in Greenville, Lt. Ryan Flood with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office told McClatchy News in a statement.

Deputies were trying to stop a driver suspected of DUI when the suspect’s car veered into oncoming traffic and hit another car head-on, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The 35-year-old wasn’t wearing a seat belt, according to state troopers, and had become entrapped.

Three people riding in the other vehicle were also hurt, according to deputies. The 5- and 7-year-old passengers, who troopers said also weren’t buckled in, were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital where the 7-year-old died.

The 47-year-old driver of that car was also treated for injuries.

No deputies were hurt. SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
