Joe Wilson SC Democratic challenger drops out of House race, citing health issues

A South Carolina Democrat who launched a challenge to U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson earlier this year dropped out of the race Monday.

Gregory Karr, an Aiken activist and organizer, tweeted Monday that he was discontinuing his run for Congress due to “personal health reasons.” Karr did not elaborate further.

Karr’s announcement comes a little more than a year before the 2022 general election.

“I remain committed to seeing Wilson unseated next year, but it would be unhealthy for me and unfair to you all for me to prolong this campaign while knowing that I can’t serve you fully,” Karr tweeted.

Karr launched his run for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressional District in July.

The 2nd District includes Aiken, Barnwell and Lexington counties, including parts of Orangeburg and Richland counties. The district could change because of reapportionment.

With Karr out of the race, Wilson’s remaining challenger is Democrat Juddson Larkins. As of last quarter, Wilson was dominating Larkins in the cash race, ending the quarter with $144,000 in the bank, while Larkins had about $7,000.
