12-year-old bitten by shark while surfing off South Carolina beach, officials say

A 12-year-old boy is recovering after authorities say he was bitten by a shark while surfing off Folly Beach in South Carolina on Sunday.

The incident happened just after 11:30 a.m., WSOC reported, citing local officials.

Andrew Gilreath, chief of Folly Beach Public Safety, said the boy suffered a bite to his foot and ankle, according to WCIV.

He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover, WCBD reported.

South Carolina had one reported shark attack in 2019, according to the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida. Researchers said the state had three attacks in 2018, McClatchy News reported.
