Midlands woman dies after falling from side of car, driver is arrested, SC cops say
One Midlands woman is dead and another is in jail following a fight where one fell off the side of a car the other was driving, the Sumter Police Department said Monday.
Shemika Oliver died Sunday morning at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital after the 25-year-old Sumter resident was injured in the crash, police said in a news release.
It was about 8 a.m. at the Hoyt Heights mobile home park when Oliver got into an argument with Tomekia Moore that turned into a fight, according to the release.
Witnesses told police that Oliver was hanging on to the side of a vehicle when the 39-year-old Moore accelerated. Oliver was thrown from the vehicle and left lying near a mobile home as Moore drove off, police said.
A short time later Sumter County sheriff’s deputies found the car. Moore “appeared to be incoherent and smelled of alcohol,” according to the release. Police said results of a blood-alcohol level analysis are pending.
The Sumter woman was charged with felony DUI resulting in death, hit and run, and failure to render aid, jail records show. Moore is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, where she is awaiting a bond hearing.
On Wednesday, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy, according to the release.
South Carolina Highway Patrol is assisting police and the coroner’s office in the investigation.
