Crash creates traffic jam for commuters heading toward Columbia
Drivers heading toward Columbia encountered delays on the Tuesday morning commute following a collision on an interstate running through the Midlands.
The crash happened before 7:45 a.m. on a stretch of Interstate 26, just as it crosses from Lexington County to Richland County, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
The wreck blocked one eastbound lane on I-26 near Exit 97, according to the tweet.
That’s the junction with U.S. 176 as the highway closes in on busier exits — including Lake Murray Boulevard, Harbison Boulevard and Piney Grove Road before reaching the area known as Malfunction Junction.
No injuries were reported in the collision, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Traffic cameras showed vehicles backed up for at least a mile.
Information on the number of vehicles involved in the wreck was not available.
At about 8:15 a.m. the lane was reopened, according to SCDOT. Traffic cameras continued to show vehicles blocked and moving very slowly.
