71-year-old hunter found dead, pinned under ATV in South Carolina woods, coroner says
A 71-year-old South Carolina “outdoorsman” was killed in an ATV accident on Saturday morning, officials say.
Donnie Mitchell Knight was in the woods in Honea Path where he usually hunts to work on his tree stand and the area around it, Kent Dill, senior deputy coroner at the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, told McClatchy News.
Just before noon, he drove his ATV into a ditch, and when he was driving out, the vehicle flipped and pinned him underneath, Dill said.
When he didn’t come home for dinner, his family called some friends who ended up calling the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, Dill said.
Officials found Knight’s truck where it was supposed to be and searched the wooded area around it, Dill said. His body was found a “good distance” into the woods near his tree stand.
He was found just after 10 p.m., according to a release from the coroner’s office.
Knight was a “real outdoorsman” who hunted and fished a lot, Dill said.
The coroner’s office determined the cause of death was “multiple blunt force injuries,” according to the release. The coroner’s office and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the incident.
