Downtown Columbia intersection blocked after car flips in crash, police say

A three-vehicle collision blocked a busy downtown intersection just before the start of the Thursday evening commute.

The Columbia Police Department and other emergency responders, including tow trucks, worked to clear the crash that occurred at the intersection of Bull and Taylor streets.

No injuries were reported in the wreck, police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons told The State.

It happened around 3 p.m., in the area near Prisma Health Baptist Hospital and the YMCA.

The collision occurred when the driver of a vehicle on Taylor Street disregarded a red light and smashed into a vehicle driving on Bull Street that had the right of way, Timmons said.

After that collision, the vehicle on Taylor Street bounced away and crashed into a third vehicle before rolling on to its roof, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle that ran the red light will receive a traffic citation, Timmons said.

Information on when the road would be cleared was not available, but at 4 p.m. Timmons said it was expected to reopen shortly.
