Second-grader fires BB gun he brought to South Carolina school, officials say

A South Carolina second-grader fired a BB gun at school Wednesday, officials say.

The Marshall Primary School student brought the gun to school, and officials say he fired it while it was still in his backpack that morning, according to FOX Carolina.

“The child never threatened anyone and the official said there was only one BB in the gun: the one that was fired,” the TV station reported.

No one was hurt and the gun was never taken out of the backpack, the Anderson Independent Mail reported.

Officials told the Independent Mail that the sound of the gun firing alerted other students and teachers to the weapon.

School officials and a school resource officer responded and quickly handled the situation, according to a statement from Anderson County District Two Superintendent Richard Rosenberger published by WYFF.

The student was removed from school while authorities investigated the situation, the statement said, according to WYFF.

The 8-year-old accused of firing the BB gun “will go through an adjudication process and the district will continue to investigate the circumstances before making a decision about expulsion or any other type of discipline,” as reported by the Independent Mail.

In his statement published by WYFF, Rosenberger said “we take the safety of all our students and staff as extremely important and are very appreciative that the staff of Anderson School District Two has handled this quickly and efficiently.”
