Worker in crane accident marks second death at SC shipyard in past year, officials say
A worker who fell four stories was the second man to die at a South Carolina shipyard in the past year, officials say.
David Clark and other employees were on a ship and using a crane on Monday, the North Charleston Police Department said in an incident report.
That’s when a cable snapped, and an object struck Clark, according to the report.
The impact sent Clark plunging about four floors from the top deck, according to police. Officers say his work hat and eye gear came off in the accident.
Clark, a 34-year-old from Summerville, “died on scene from blunt force injuries,” the Charleston County Coroner’s Office said in a news release.
It happened at Detyens Shipyard in North Charleston, which was the site of another deadly accident.
Martin Anthony, 51, was killed in a fall at the same location in June, The State reported at the time. He was doing work for the U.S. Navy as a civilian.
The shipyard is near the Cooper River and roughly 7 miles north of downtown Charleston.
