Midlands woman charged with attempted murder after New Year’s Eve shooting, cops say

An argument on New Year’s Eve between two Midlands women turned from a fight into a shooting, sending one to the hospital and the other to jail, the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s office said.

Charges were filed against Brandon Tyler on Wednesday, arrest warrants show.

The 32-year-old Orangeburg woman was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a crime, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

“For a few minutes of arguing, this individual faces up to 30 years in prison for this,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in the release. “There’s absolutely no sense in this type of junk from anyone of any age.”

The investigation began Dec. 31 after hospital officials reported a woman was being treated for gunshot wounds, according to an incident report.

The woman told investigators she went to visit a male friend to get money and was standing by a vehicle when she heard three gunshots and realized she’d been hit, the incident report stated.

When asked about the shooter, the woman told investigators she did not know who pulled the trigger, or why, according to the incident report.

The woman said she didn’t have any disagreements with anyone, according to the release.

Evidence of scratch and claw marks on the right side of her neck, right hand and right knee had deputies investigating that claim, which led them naming Tyler as the shooter, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the woman, she scratches her neck, but had no explanation why other parts of her body were injured, according to the incident report.

“While her story changed, it never did become consistent,” the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators said the women argued before Tyler opened fire with a handgun, according to the release.

Tyler’s bond was set at $27,500 during a court appearance Wednesday.
