Deer bolts into middle school in South Carolina, leading to odd police pursuit
A deer got into a South Carolina middle school early Monday, resulting in a strange kind of police pursuit.
The incident was reported around 11 a.m. at Long Middle School in Cheraw, roughly 90 miles northeast of Columbia, on the North Carolina state line.
“The Cheraw Police Department is currently at Long Middle School in reference to a deer inside the building,” police posted on Facebook. “All kids are safe!”
Department officials posted not long after that the unwelcome deer “had been removed.”
“Everything is back to normal,” police said on Facebook.
The sight of multiple police cars at the school alarmed some in the community. “Saw about three police cars turning into the parking lot at Long Middle today and was praying it wasn’t anything too serious,” posted Hope Shari Rhyne.
Once word got out that it involved a deer in the school, commenters on social media began begging police to post video. However, body cam footage was not immediately made available, if it exists at all.
Police have not given details on how the deer got in the school or how police got it out .
“I bet that was an exciting morning,” posted Marilyn Demby Caulder on the police department’s Facebook page.
“I really hope we get to see footage of the deer at school! Too funny!” wrote Shannon Elizabeth Gilshian.
