Two Midlands men killed in head-on crash identified by Lexington County coroner
Two people were killed in a collision Tuesday morning in Lexington County, the Swansea Police Department said.
The crash involved two vehicles, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The wreck happened at about 7:30 a.m. on Highway 321, near the county line between Lexington and Orangeburg, Master Trooper David Jones said in an interview with The State. The road is also called the Savannah Highway.
Details were limited, but Jones said both of the crash victims were in the same vehicle.
They were identified as Neeses residents Ronald C. Bolin, 71, and James F. Gleaton, 73, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.
The man driving the other vehicle was injured in the wreck and had to be taken to an area hospital, according to Jones.
Information on his condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported, Jones said.
The collision occurred when the man driving a 2006 Chevrolet van was heading south on the highway and crossed the center line, smashing head on into a 2011 Toyota heading in the opposite direction, according to Jones.
Bolin, who was driving the Toyota, and Gleaton, a front-seat passenger, were both wearing seat belts and they died at the scene, Fisher said.
The Chevy driver was not wearing a seat belt, according to Jones.
The road was temporarily closed, but the wreck was cleared at about 10 a.m., Jones said.
Information on any possible criminal charges was not available, but the collision is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
